WHAT TO EXPECT

It can be a scary experience walking into a new place where you may not know anyone. We understand the anxiety that going to a church for the first time might bring, and we want to be sure and make your experience one that is stress-free and welcoming.

Below, we have listed some of the most Frequently Asked Questions we get. If you have any others, please feel free to call the church office 955-9335 or email us by using contact us below.

What should I wear?

Whatever you’re comfortable in. Some people come to church in shorts and a t-shirt, while others dress in business casual, and occasionally you might even see a tie! There’s no Biblical style of dress, so it’s up to you. If wearing a sundress, you may want to bring a sweater or sweatshirt since the air-conditioning can be quite chilly at times.

Will I have to say anything?

Nope! We want you to feel comfortable. We won’t single you out in any way, except if you’d like, we would like to give you a lei so that people can make sure and introduce themselves to you. But that is completely up to you. When you come, you can feel free to sit back and enjoy the celebration.

How will I find my way around?

We try our best to make sure that the first faces you see are smiling ones. We have greeters in the parking lot, at both entrances and throughout the sanctuary who will be happy to give you a quick tour, help you check your kids into their classrooms, and help you find your way to a seat in the sanctuary.

What about my kids?

We have an awesome ministry for your children during both Sunday service, from newborn through the fifth grade, called Jesus Kids! Jesus Kids is also available on Saturday evening service for children 3 years old (Potty Trained) – 5th grade. We also have a nursing mothers room for those who have the need.

We provide a safe and loving place for your newborn in the nursery. We also have a room for toddlers, 19-35 months, complete with worship, lessons, toys, and activities. Children from preschool through 5th grade will enjoy age-appropriate teaching from the Bible, worship together and experience hands-on learning activities.

We care about the welfare of each and every child, all of our children’s workers are screened through a process that includes reference calls and background checks. We will assign you a parent-specific number and should your child or their teacher need you we will post your number on the main screen in the sanctuary. This also provides a secure drop-off and sign in system.

What about Junior and Senior high Students?

After worship is over students in middle and high school join our youth leadership team led by our Youth Pastor. Your teens will build friendships with other students as they dig into their Bibles and study God’s word. They will also work off some energy playing crazy games.

Sunday Morning at 8:00 AM [6th-8th Grade Only] and 10:30 AM [9th-12th Grade Only] @ Koinonia Hale 670 Auahi St
Wednesday Night 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM Jr. High 6th-8th & Parent Split Bible Study and Potluck Fellowship @ One Love Kakaako campus 670 Auahi St
Thursday Nights 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM Sr. High 9th-12th @ One Love Kakaako campus 670 Auahi St

Note: There is no youth service on Saturday currently.

Will I be asked to give money?

Nope. We do not pass an offering plate at any time during our services. Tithing boxes are located in the back of the sanctuary and to the right of the stage next to the communion tables. They are there as a part of worship for those who are part of the body of Christ and understand the principle of tithing. You should never feel pressured to give money.

What’s the celebration service like?

Our celebrations begin with worship. We have a live praise band who lead us in fun, upbeat, contemporary worship. Then we have announcements and move onto the message. The messages are directly from the Bible, so if you have a Bible, bring it. If not, we have them available for you from our ushers.

When the message is over our praise band will lead us in another time of worship. During this time you’ll see a lot of movement as people get up to take communion on each side of the sanctuary. Prayer team members are also on the sides ready and waiting to pray with those who want prayer.

We have a hospitality table outside of the main entrance where we offer coffee and donuts for those of you who may need a little coffee or sugar to get your brain going. Donations are accepted but not required.

We hope that this time will become your favorite way to start each week.

A call to servanthood and ministry is the natural progression of a maturing believer.

What’s at the Core of One Love?

We Believe the only true basis of Christian Fellowship is God’s Agape Love, which is greater than any differences we possess, and without which we have no right to claim ourselves to be Christians.

We Believe Worship of God should be Spiritual. Therefore… we remain flexible and yield to the Holy Spirit to direct our Worship.

We Believe Worship of God should be Inspirational. Therefore… we give great place to music in our Worship.

We Believe Worship of God should be intelligent. Therefore… our services are designed with great emphasis on Teaching the Word of God, the Bible, that He might instruct us as to how He would be Worshiped.

We Believe Worship of God is fruitful. Therefore… we look for His Love in our lives as the Supreme Manifestation that we have truly been Worshiping Him.

Grace and Works

The Kingdom of God is very different from the kingdom of this world. Our fallen human nature is conditioned to measure success by performance-based goals. These goals could be strict, self-imposed disciplines or rules enforced by a legalistic religious institution. Unfortunately, these systems have little to do with grace and everything to do with works-based acceptance.

Introduction

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. — Matthew 11:28-30

Breaking free from this endless cycle of works-based acceptance is foundational for spiritual growth and maturity. Only when a believer in Christ begins from a place of acceptance, will they begin to cultivate genuine fruit of the Spirit. Just as no tree can work hard to produce fruit, no believer can work hard to practice the fruit of the spirit (love, joy, peace, etc). Only when people are nourished by the living water of Jesus will they naturally be able to produce the fruit of righteous living. The fruit is evidence of where something or someone is rooted. Jesus said, apart from me, you can do nothing (John 15:5) and understanding God’s grace is the essential first step in knowing you are connected to the source of true life.

You don’t get the fruit of the spirit by trying to be more loving, more joyful, or move peacefully… the Fruit of the Spirit is a natural byproduct of your intimate relationship with God.

It all starts with Grace

Only when a believer truly understands that they are powerless to save themselves, does the gratitude for what Christ has done for them become a reality. Every man-made religious system in the world, every false religion today, is made up of people working to make themselves right with God. When people work, their wages are not a gift but payment for their efforts. Instead of man climbing the proverbial mountain to gain access to God, Christ descended from Heaven to do for you what you could never do for yourself.

No amount of good works can compare to the divine blood that was shed for you to pay for your sins. This is why Christ took your punishment so you could be set free from the law of works and have a new relationship with him. Grace is a free gift so you can be declared righteous and walk in the confidence of your new relationship with God from now and for all eternity. But you have an adversary who wants to distort God’s free gift and keep you in the bondage of ‘earning’ your salvation. These two systems, God’s way, and man’s way are in stark contrast to one another and are essential to understanding your true identity and walking in your ultimate calling and purpose.

Two systems prevalent in the mind of people today

The Foundation of Grace
The Foundation of Grace begins with the understanding that God did for you what you could never do for yourself. God’s free gift of forgiveness is extended to everyone who puts their faith in him. Significance is rooted in God’s love for us as adopted and holy children of God – this is our new identity in Christ. Sustenance for the believer is finding total contentment, joy, and confidence in your everyday experiences with Him. The greatest achievement for those established on the foundation of grace is to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbors as Christ loved us.

The results of living in God’s grace:

  • Walking according to the Spirit
  • A life marked by spiritual growth, maturity, and peace
  • Abandoning outcomes to God
  • Recipient and extender of God’s Grace
  • The fruit of the Spirit — Christ-likeness
  • A life committed to obey and please God

The Cycle of Works
For those caught in the endless cycle of a works-based system, achievement is the beginning of defining your self-worth and identity. Sustenance is rooted in fear of not being good enough and comparing yourself to others. Significance is based on performance-based goals while neglecting the everyday character and intimacy that Christ requires of followers. Acceptance for the individual is recognition from others but is limited to your “last performance.” Unfortunately, the cycle of works too often resembles those inside the church who do not understand their true identity in Christ — a people stuck in works-based salvation, which is not salvation at all, but the world’s way of making you feel like you’ve accomplished something that Christ has already done for you. God is not opposed to effort, but he is opposed to earning.

The results of living in works-mode:

  • Walking according to the Flesh
  • Making projects more important than people
  • Controlling behaviors
  • Critical and judgemental of self and others
  • The fruit of the flesh — Anger, frustration, jealousy, strife, etc
  • Live to please man

Are you carrying the easy yoke or caught in the endless cycle of works?

We have assembled a downloadable reference guide for you to download, print, and study. This guide will highlight the vast difference between an individual flourishing in the grace of God from those caught in the endless cycle of works, trying to earn their right standing (acceptance) with God and others. Take the time to download and study this resource. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).

I Said Yes! Week 4

Receiving and Extending Forgiveness

There is a great misunderstanding about forgiveness. Forgiveness is not bypassing God’s justice; it is not waiting for “time to heal;” It does not deny the hurt that someone caused, nor is it a natural response in a world that demands justice.

The Real You

Forgiveness is a choice, an obedient step to extend mercy to those who have wronged you because God has provided you complete forgiveness and reconciliation from your past faults and failures.

Forgiveness is a free gift given to believers to release them from the pain of their past.

When you commit to following Christ, your goal is to be like Jesus, and forgiveness is a sign of genuine faith-in-action. When Jesus was nailed to the Cross at Calvary, his words to the Roman soldiers below were, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Forgiveness was at the heart of God’s reconciliation plan, and he requires his followers to extend forgiveness to others, just as God has freely forgiven you.

Three key areas of forgiveness:
Knowing you are forgiven, forgiving yourself, and forgiving others are all keys to spiritual growth.

1. Do you believe that there is anything that God has not forgiven you for?
People who do not believe God has forgiven them for their sinful past get caught up in works-based salvation, meaning the individual feels a burden to earn good deeds to outweigh their past failures. The problem with this thinking is that the Bible makes it abundantly clear that anyone who relies on the works of the law to get right with God is under a curse (Galatians 3:10). Good works are a natural response to our gratefulness for what Christ did, not a payment for earning our way to heaven.

 2. Have you forgiven yourself?
People who surrender to Christ but do not forgive themselves for their sinful past are stuck with pride. It is prideful to believe that God has forgiven you, yet remain in self-bondage. You were purchased with a price to live in freedom, not to live in self-condemnation. The blood of Jesus cleanses all who come to him from all unrighteousness (Hebrews 9:14). Accept the forgiveness God has provided for you through Jesus; otherwise, you are living as though Christ died in vain and his divine sacrifice was not enough to cleanse you of your sinful past.

3. Do you need to forgive others?
Forgiving others is essential to your new life as a Christian. Unforgiveness hinders the work of the Spirit in your life and causes you to remain under God’s judgment (Matthew 6:15). Unforgiveness opens the door for the enemy (Satan) to invade your thoughts and emotions and blinds you to the real call of being a disciple. Forgiving others is a requirement for those who have been forgiven. Read Matthew 18:21-35.

I Said Yes! Week 3

Your New Identity in Christ

The world says you are valued by what you’ve accomplished (works), by what you own (possessions), what you’ve done (accomplishments), or how you look (appearance)… But this is not the real you.

The Real You

When you meet Jesus for the first time, your eyes and ears open to the truth. When you realize you have been living the wrong way, and turn to Jesus, your spirit is supernaturally awakened, and you are immediately transferred from the world’s broken, dysfunctional system to the Kingdom of the Creator.

The Bible says, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14).

No longer does your evil nature have to rule your life. Now, by the power of the Holy Spirit living inside you, you can walk in a way that honors God. Your sinful past no longer dictates your righteous future. When you place your faith in Jesus Christ, you become a citizen of heaven and a holy, adopted child of God.

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Jesus prayed to the Father that he would “sanctify them in the truth of His word” (John 17:17). He said the word (the Bible) is truth and that when he ascends to heaven, he will send the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth to guide believers (John 16:13, John 14:16-17).

Knowing what God, our Heavenly Father says about you, is instrumental in knowing your real identity, and the Bible is God’s word given to us so we can be confident in our true identity. Take time to study what the Father says about you. Replace the lies from this world and the Devil with truth from God, your heavenly creator.

In Christ you are secure

The Apostle Paul says: “I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38).

The Bible says: “In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons [and daughters] through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.” (Ephesians 1:4-10).

In Christ you are significant

The Bible says: “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.” (1 Corinthians 2:12-13)

You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2: 9-10)

In Christ you are set apart

“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one Spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.” (Philippians 1:27)

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16)

I Said Yes! Week 2

The Good News of the Gospel

The gospel is God’s plan for restoring all of creation unto himself by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The gospel literally means “good news” and Jesus tells his disciples to “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole of creation” (Mark 16:15). When you understand the overarching message of the Bible, it will help you understand the significance of knowing and sharing the good news with others.

Gospel Overview

1. The Author of Life
The Bible begins with, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Your origin starts with God, your Father, as the creator in the Garden of Eden in the right relationship with mankind — Adam and Eve. God, in His love, created man with free will to choose right from wrong — people are not robots programmed to love God, but they have been given a choice to love and obey him or reject and disobey him. The Bible says, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).

2. Your Problem
Adam and Eve were deceived by Satan and disobeyed God’s command. This rebellion severed their intimacy with God, introduced death into the world, and expelled mankind from perfect union with God. This disobedience, called sin, infected all of humanity like cancer and left humankind under judgment (Romans 5:12). Since the fall of mankind from the Garden of Eden, mankind has tried to bridge the divide between man and God by building towers, carving idols, and by following strict moral standards. But the Bible declares that “They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one” (Psalms 14:3).

3. God’s Solution
God had a plan to judge Satan and restore all of humanity through the person and work of Jesus. Jesus was with God in the beginning and was willing to suffer the consequences of man’s rebellion. Two thousand years ago, Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and gave his life up to save all humanity from the effects of sin. The Bible says God made him who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). Just as sin came into the world through one man (Adam), so through one act of righteousness and obedience (Jesus’ sacrifice), many will be declared righteous (Romans 5:18). This is the good news of the Gospel; God made a way for humankind to be reconciled through faith in Jesus (Romans 5:8-11).

4. Your Response
Just as Adam and Eve were given free will to choose, God gives you the opportunity to repent and put your faith in Jesus or reject his substitutional sacrifice. Repentance is simply choosing to give up the way you’ve been doing things and follow God’s way. Jesus said, “So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32-33). Unfortunately, many will choose to reject God’s grace, the gift of salvation, and choose to live eternally separated from God. For it is appointed for man to die once and then comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27).

5. Your New Life
“To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). When you place your faith in Jesus you are adopted into God’s family. No longer are you bound to the shame and guilt of your past but now, you have the power to walk in new life. Jesus said that he will send his followers a helper, the Holy Spirit, who will guide you into all truth (John 14:26). Salvation is not only an event but an interactive life with God, participating now in what Jesus is doing on earth. Like a messenger from Heaven, you can now participate in expanding the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth, living with humanity’s eternity in mind.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Five short videos about five big questions.

One Love has put together GoodNewsHawaii, five short videos, and a free discipleship booklet to help believers understand their new identity in Christ. Take some time to watch these videos and download the free resource to learn more about what the Bible says about trials, prayer, and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

I Said Yes! Week 1

Congratulations! We want to be the first to welcome you to God’s family!

We have assembled a short series of resources that will encourage you to learn more about your new identity in Christ and help you connect with a group in the church that will help you grow in your faith.

The Bible is God’s story of redemption for his people, given to us freely, by grace, through Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9). God’s forgiveness is free for the taking, but it was not cheap.

When you truly understand, you are deeply loved and accepted by God, through faith in Jesus, it is the most empowering truth you will ever encounter.

A supernatural transformation happened when you accepted Christ as your savior. Your Spirit resurrected from the dead, and you were transferred from the Kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of light. Now, your real identity is hidden in Christ Jesus. It is essential to know that your new identity is secure in Christ and to begin to discover your identity in Him. No longer are you bound to the shackles of sinful past! You are a new creation; the old has passed away, and you now have the power to walk righteously.

Just as the Apostle Paul encourages new believers to learn more of God, we encourage you to put effort into your new relationships with God and discover the joy of your new life in Christ. Each week we will provide you with a helpful resource to encourage your faith so you can grow in your new relationship with Christ.

May God bless you on your new journey!

Waxer & Cindy Tipton

Have you heard of the Bible Project?

Reading your Bible is essential to spiritual growth and maturity. Before diving in, you may want to take a moment to learn more about how the books are assembled, key themes in the Bible, or chapter summaries.

The Bible Project is a great way for new believers to learn about the Bible. For example, in the book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul wrote a letter to a group of new believers living in a pagan metropolis. This manuscript is divided into two sections:

  1. The Gospel story of God’s redemptive plan to unify all things under Christ, and;
  2. Practical ways to live in light of this new knowledge and understanding.

We hope this short video will help you understand the importance of knowing sound doctrine and walking out your faith.
